Figurative
I enjoy painting figures. There is nothing more interesting than an individual. To capture the likeness an nuances of a figure is both a challenge and a joy.
A new direction in my figurative works explores the idea of a window metaphor. I really like to find unique architectural antiques that are handmade. On one occasion while traveling with my wife through Taos, New Mexico, I found a number of 19th century window frames and shutters that inspired the idea. They were made out of teak wood and had hand forged hinges and latches. I felt that their primitive and rich simplicity contrasted with the softness of a figurative subject would make a unique work with a three dimensional quality.
More than being a beautiful figurative work, the window frames create the metaphor of catching a glimpse into the life of another soul. I think this serves to emphasize the thought that each person occupies a world of their own and has an important story that they are a part of. I want the viewer to see the beauty of a person and perhaps be left wondering what the story is behind the eyes of the figure they are looking at… the figure having opened a window for us to see a little piece of their world.
